Germanys, Brits, and Canadians more likely to be traveling!

So I just read a study stating that nearly 90% of all Germans have passports. Granted, its Europe and most countries are the size of small states in the U.S., but still 90%!!! That's a lot more than U.S. Citizens for which only about 20-25% have active passports. I am certain its changing for the younger generation, I hope.

I remember during my study abroad at Leeds University in England, 'gap year' is common and encouraged in society. It's a gap year off between high school and before going to university or working. Most young people usually go abroad and do a combination of traveling and social work/ education. Other students explore career options before committing to attending university for 4+ years. It definitely helps with maturity and personal growth, and might even confirm your commitment to pursuing your dreams in a certain field. Universities and employers view the gap year as a very positive accomplishment. Can the United States adopt a Gap Year mentality?
